The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: Science Fiction for Kids

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a serialized science-fiction story for kids (start with Episode 1!), told in 15-20 minute episodes for parents to put on when driving around town, or to marathon on road trips, or to bond over before bed. When pressed, we describe it as a "mystery gang" story, sort of like Scooby-Doo in space. The story centers on Finn Caspian, an 8-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. He and his friends Abigail, Elias and Vale are Explorers Troop 301, taking off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help the occasional alien, and solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the Marlowe. The story is written and performed by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out, former web editor of Time Out Chicago Kids, and father of two boys. We only mention that because his son Griffin, 6, serves as editor of the story, appearing in episodes to critique, make predictions and express skepticism that his father knows what he's talking about, which also happens to be the way the rest of their relationship works.

In this week's episode, the explorers need to return the amulet to King Huxley, but on the way there they hear from an old friend, run into an old friend, and make a new friend. Unfortunately, that new friend is a ghost who conscripts them to fight a menace that's terrorizing the space graveyard. Just another typical day for Intergalactic Explorers!

In this week's episode, things are really heating up as the explorers have to find a way to get the final piece of the amulet, while a wild horde of space animals hunts them, and King Huxley's explorers try to take it for themselves. Will Finn be able to escape the yeti guards like his little sister did? Will they finally make the amulet whole? Will a space animal have fur for lunch? All of those questions will be answered in this episode!

In this week's episode, we're back with Finn and the rest of the Explorers in Troop 301, as they seek the final missing piece of the amulet. But they land on a planet in crisis (for a change!), have to run for their lives from some very…interesting aliens, and have to help restore the balance. Thanks to the members of Griffin's Sound Club for making this episode possible!

This episode is the first of two this week, and we'll be back at the end of the week to see what Finn and the gang are up to.

In this week's episode of our little sci-fi adventure for kids, Vale, finding himself the only explorer who can still move his limbs, decides to side with the very alien who has frozen all of his friends! Has Vale gone rogue? Or has he found the way to warm an ice alien's heart? You can probably guess.

Hi!

BeeBop here. I received so many great ideas from listeners for pranks to pull on Jonathan, that I decided to put together one big, BeeBop Bonanza prank episode for April Fool's Day. Hope you like it! Make sure you go to the Finn Caspian blog to see Eamon's diagram!

Here's the stuff Jonathan always puts in the show notes:

In this week's episode, the Explorers Troop 301 take a backseat as Paige takes centerstage. We find out what's been happening to Paige as she's been held prisoner by King Huxley, and it will likely surprise no one that she's taking matters into her own hands. But when she comes across another inhabitant of the castle, will it be a friend or foe?

This is by far the most difficult puzzle we've had in the show's run. The solution is an anagram of "SEEK THICKET RIM." The key is really in the -ICK sound. That might help crack it. If your child is too young to read, or just beginning, you can also talk about anagrams in terms of sounds. That may not help solve this puzzle, but it may help with understanding anagrams and how words fit together.

One more clue, in white text. Highlight if you want to see it: It's three words, the second word is "three."

And after playing around with the letters for a while, you can always use an internet anagram solver (it's not cheating if you've given it an honest try).

And while there seems to be something funny going on with the kids' rivals in Explorers Troop 103 from the Shakespeare 820, Vale still gamely takes the driver's seat for a race around the planet. In the second episode of our mini-series featuring our introbot BeeBop, he answers a question from listeners, and tells the story of the time he clashed with some menacing marine mammals. HEY NEW LISTENERS: This is a one-off tale you can enjoy, but you're probably better off starting with Episode 1 from back in August. That'll give you the best understanding of what's going on here. Also, big news: We have a store on Threadless! Now you can buy Finn shirts, tote bags and a fleece blanket for some reason.

We always love art and jokes sent to earth@finncaspian.com. And don't forget about Griffin's Sound Club! Send yours! In this episode, BeeBop takes the controls to tell us his origin story, and about life on the world where he lived on before traveling to Earth. Listeners who have sent their art in to our robot will want to hear this one.

In the final face-off with Bunce, Boggis and Bean, Explorers Troop 301 and their friends split up to find the villains, the dreamstone and the captured adults. That means dodging more traps, hunting down the precious stone, and stopping the Marlowe's archenemies before they escape to the station. And in a final showdown, the explorers have to use everything they've learned in the last weeks as everything comes to a head.

Thank you to everyone who listened and talked with us about this first season. It's been so fun! And the show wouldn't be nearly as good without our awesome listeners. Make sure you subscribe in iTunes so you can hear our mini-season, "BeeBop Tales," and the various updates as we head into season 2 in January. Also, you can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay in touch.
