The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: Science Fiction for Kids

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a serialized science-fiction story for kids (start with Episode 1!), told in 15-20 minute episodes for parents to put on when driving around town, or to marathon on road trips, or to bond over before bed. When pressed, we describe it as a "mystery gang" story, sort of like Scooby-Doo in space. The story centers on Finn Caspian, an 8-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. He and his friends Abigail, Elias and Vale are Explorers Troop 301, taking off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help the occasional alien, and solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the Marlowe. The story is written and performed by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out, former web editor of Time Out Chicago Kids, and father of two boys. We only mention that because his son Griffin, 6, serves as editor of the story, appearing in episodes to critique, make predictions and express skepticism that his father knows what he's talking about, which also happens to be the way the rest of their relationship works.

In this week's episode, BeeBop has to solve a riddle with the help of listeners, but that's only where the trouble begins! Will the toys enlist in BeeBop's battle? Will the evil Messingham foil him once and for all? How much topspin does BeeBop's forehand really possess? There's only one way to know…

In honor of the summer family vacation, members of Kids Listen—the nonprofit org full of the best kids' podcasters in all the land—are publishing episodes related to road trips! As big fans of the games you play in the car on those long rides, we thought we'd make one up for our listeners. All you have to do is record your kids (or your whole family!) saying the words or sounds on the list below, email us the file, and we'll edit it into the pre-recorded story and send it back to you. Just use the voice app on your phone, and record it as one file and email to earth@finncaspian.com. I’m going to record the story, and I’ll edit your responses in, and send you the mp3. I’ll also send you a PDF of the story, so if you’re going on a road trip, you can take it with you.

Here's what I need from you:

  1. A noun
  2. An adjective
  3. A name
  4. A verb
  5. A pleasant sound
  6. An ominous sound
  7. The sound of a robot turning on
  8. The sound of a confused robot
  9. The sound of an alien practicing karate kicks
  10. The sound of a robot asking an alien to stop practicing karate kicks
  11. A fruit
  12. And the sound of a robot eating a fruit

I know it probably sounds complicated. But if you’d like to play along, it’s actually fairly simple. Just let the voice memo app on your phone run, or turn on the recorder app on your computer, and then email me the file. I’ll take care of the rest.

I’ll do my best to turn them around as they come in. But I’m only going to be able to offer this until July 18th. After that, you can send me the files, and I’ll do my best, but I'm only guaranteeing up until the 18th. We'll have the story up after the 18th at finncaspian.com/game.

Thanks for playing along! I can't wait to hear what everyone comes up with!

BeeBop is back for another mini-series, and this one is one of his more ridiculous (and that's saying a lot!) In this week's episode, BeeBop and a new friend hop through portal after portal, running from the time police! Will they escape, or will the Van Damme puns eventually catch up with them? There's only one way to find out!

In this week's episode, the explorers need to return the amulet to King Huxley, but on the way there they hear from an old friend, run into an old friend, and make a new friend. Will Finn be able to escape the yeti guards like his little sister did? Will they finally make the amulet whole? Will a space animal have fur for lunch? All of those questions will be answered in this episode!

In this week's episode, the Explorers Troop 301 take a backseat as Paige takes centerstage. We find out what's been happening to Paige as she's been held prisoner by King Huxley, and it will likely surprise no one that she's taking matters into her own hands. But when she comes across another inhabitant of the castle, will it be a friend or foe?

This is by far the most difficult puzzle we've had in the show's run. The solution is an anagram of "SEEK THICKET RIM." The key is really in the -ICK sound. That might help crack it. If your child is too young to read, or just beginning, you can also talk about anagrams in terms of sounds. That may not help solve this puzzle, but it may help with understanding anagrams and how words fit together.

One more clue, in white text. Highlight if you want to see it: It's three words, the second word is "three."

And after playing around with the letters for a while, you can always use an internet anagram solver (it's not cheating if you've given it an honest try).

In this week's episode, the Explorers Troop 301 have to face down a valley literally crawling with evil aliens, and find an even more intimidating monster at the bottom. Also, we extended the dog name voting by a week, to let some folks catch up. To vote, go to http://www.finncaspian.com/dog/ or click here. And it's our last week of bugging you! If you're so inclined, please take our survey! In what is surely one of the silliest episodes yet of our show, Finn and the Explorers land on a planet full of deep valleys, cave dwellings, and super-friendly aliens who are perhaps a bit…too friendly. And! We've got some dog names to vote on!

In today's episode, Finn has to compete in the final game of the Intergalactic Space Olympics, only to discover that he needs the help of a new, unexpected friend. And, the Explorers learn that winning isn't exactly what they bargained for.

We're thinking of making new shows. If you're so inclined, please take our survey! (https://goo.gl/forms/ap7tDIoKiikctR1N2)
