The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: Science Fiction for Kids

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a serialized science-fiction story for kids (start with Episode 1!), told in 15-20 minute episodes for parents to put on when driving around town, or to marathon on road trips, or to bond over before bed. When pressed, we describe it as a "mystery gang" story, sort of like Scooby-Doo in space. The story centers on Finn Caspian, an 8-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. He and his friends Abigail, Elias and Vale are Explorers Troop 301, taking off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help the occasional alien, and solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the Marlowe. The story is written and performed by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out, former web editor of Time Out Chicago Kids, and father of two boys. We only mention that because his son Griffin, 6, serves as editor of the story, appearing in episodes to critique, make predictions and express skepticism that his father knows what he's talking about, which also happens to be the way the rest of their relationship works.

Today's episode takes a break from the regular Finn Caspian storyline to tell a short, spooky story for Halloween. Every year the Marlowe throws the best Halloween party in the universe. But this year, an uninvited guest causes some trouble for the Explorers (especially Voltronix Zu).

For parents: There's nothing about this story that's particularly scary compared to other Finn stories, but the ghost's voice is maybe a little creepy. So it might be worth giving it a listen or testing it out first.

And if you want to pick up on the kid-lit reference in today's story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving is available for free here.

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a Typedrawer Media production, and is a serialized story podcasts for kids ages 5-10, though this one isn't so serialized.

In today's episode, the kids in Explorers' Troop 301 once again find themselves in trouble on the surface of an alien planet, as the giant Saphrite sends out an army to stop the invaders. And once again, the explorers have to head beneath the surface of a planet before they can blast off. But! What does it mean when you head below the surface of a living planet? It means some…interesting…terrain.

SPOILER ALERT: DON'T READ THIS BEFORE LISTENING TO THE EPISODE: Today's episode ends with a riddle. Here is the text of it. If listeners know the answer, email earth@finncaspian.com, and we'll relay it to the explorers. We'll also send out a prize to everyone who submits a correct (or reasonable) answer:

Around you I spin but disappear

Whenever you see gold

I’ve been around for millions of years

But I’m only a month old.

In today's episode, the the kids in Troop 301 find themselves exploring their own home the way they would an alien planet. There are reportedly aliens aboard the Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station, and the troop are finding evidence all around. But that's not even the big news aboard the Marlowe. There's a new robot in town, and Finn and Foggy aren't too happy about it.

With the Marlowe still recovering from the monster attack, Finn and his friends get into a little mischief aboard the station. But that all comes to an end when they're sent on their first exploring mission, to a planet they've been told will be peaceful, quiet, and maybe even a little bit boring. The good (bad) news is that their visit turns anything but boring.

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian tells the story of a boy aboard the Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Space Station who explores far-flung galaxies, interacts with curious aliens and solves a mystery that will (fingers crossed) keep his home from being vaporized. Finn is a part of Explorers Troop 301, along with his best friends Abigail, Elias and Vale, and this episode introduces listeners to the stars of this science-fiction serialized story for kids.
